What is an Eye Drop Filling Machine?

An Eye Drop Filling Machine is a piece of pharmaceutical packaging equipment that fills sterile ophthalmic solutions into small dropper bottles (typically 3 ml to 15 ml), inserts the dropper tip, and screws the ROPP cap. It is purpose-built for the low-volume, high-precision requirements of eye drops, nasal drops, ear drops, and other small-format sterile liquids.

Unlike a generic bottle filling machine, an eye drop filler must deliver millilitre-level dose accuracy, support nitrogen-flushed headspace, place a dropper insert before capping, and operate inside a laminar airflow (LAF) workstation. Every contact part is SS316L stainless steel, electro-polished, and validated for terminal-sterile ophthalmic products.

The purpose of an eye drop filling machine is straightforward: fill every dropper bottle with the exact dose, free from particulate contamination, ready for the patient.

How does an Eye Drop Filling Machine work?

The eye drop filling cycle is a synchronised sequence of indexing, dosing, dropper placement, and capping steps. Here is the step-by-step process:

  1. Bottle in-feed: Sterilised LDPE / HDPE dropper bottles are loaded on the infeed conveyor and oriented by a star wheel.
  2. Nitrogen flush (optional but standard): A nozzle purges the bottle headspace with food-grade nitrogen to displace oxygen and protect oxidation-sensitive formulations.
  3. Servo piston filling: A servo-driven piston (or peristaltic pump) dispenses 3 ml to 15 ml with ±1% dose accuracy. The fill nozzle descends to a fixed height above the bottle mouth to avoid foaming and aerosol.
  4. Dropper tip placement: A vibratory bowl feeder orients sterilised dropper tips and inserts them into the bottle mouth.
  5. ROPP cap feeding: ROPP aluminium caps are oriented in a cap-feeding bowl and delivered to the capper.
  6. ROPP capping: A servo-driven capping head with torque control tightens the ROPP cap to a pre-set value (typically 8–14 inch-lb).
  7. Output: Capped bottles exit on the conveyor to the labelling machine, inspection booth, or cartoning line.

The complete process is controlled by a PLC with an HMI touchscreen. Operators store bottle recipes, set dose volume, capping torque, and nitrogen flush time, and view real-time output and reject counters.

When to choose 30 BPM vs 60 BPM Eye Drop Filling Machine

Choosing the right capacity saves both capex and footprint. Use this honest decision guide:

Choose 30 BPM

When your batch is under 15,000 bottles per shift, you run multiple SKUs, or you are a contract manufacturer with frequent changeovers.

Choose 60 BPM

When your batch exceeds 20,000 bottles per shift, you run a few high-volume SKUs, or you want headroom for future demand growth.

Choose 30 BPM + LAF

When you are entering ophthalmic production for the first time and need a fully validated starter line./span>

Choose 60 BPM + LAF + reject

When you supply regulated markets (USFDA, EU) and need documented 100% weight-check or vision inspection.

Where is an Eye Drop Filling Machine used?

An eye drop filling machine is the central station of every ophthalmic packaging line. The pharmaceutical version is the strictest in build, but the same core machine is used in:

  • Ophthalmic drops — lubricating drops, antibiotic drops, anti-allergy drops, anti-glaucoma drops, mydriatic drops, steroid drops.
  • Nasal drops & sprays — decongestant drops, saline nasal sprays in small PET bottles.
  • Ear drops — antibiotic and wax-softening drops in 5 ml to 15 ml dropper bottles.
  • Small sterile liquids — diagnostic reagents, in-vitro solutions, dental anaesthetics in vials.
  • Combination ophthalmic products — multi-ingredient drops requiring nitrogen-flushed headspace.

Our eye drop filling machines are installed across India and in 25+ export markets. Every machine is built at our Ahmedabad facility and dispatched with full IQ/OQ documentation on request.

Frequently Asked Questions — Eye Drop Filling Machine

An Eye Drop Filling Machine is a piece of pharmaceutical packaging equipment that fills sterile ophthalmic solutions into small dropper bottles (typically 3 ml to 15 ml), inserts the dropper tip, and screws the ROPP cap. It is purpose-built for the low-volume, high-precision requirements of eye drops and nasal drops.

An Eye Drop Filling Machine works by indexing dropper bottles under a servo-driven piston or peristaltic filling head, dosing a precise volume (typically 3–15 ml), placing a sterilised dropper insert, and tightening a ROPP cap with torque control. Nitrogen flushing is done before filling to displace oxygen and protect the formulation.

Our dual-head Eye Drop Filling Machines are available in 30 bottles per minute and 60 bottles per minute variants. The 30 BPM model suits small-batch and pilot lines, while the 60 BPM model is designed for full-scale commercial production.

The Eye Drop Filling Machine handles round LDPE / HDPE dropper bottles from 3 ml to 15 ml in standard configuration. The diameter range is 15 mm to 30 mm. Change parts are required for larger containers such as 30 ml nasal spray bottles.

Yes. Our Eye Drop Filling Machine is built with SS316L contact parts, sanitary tri-clamp fittings, and is designed to operate inside a laminar airflow (LAF) workstation. It supports sterilised-in-place (SIP) dropper trays, pre-sterilised dropper tips, and nitrogen-flushed headspace for terminal-sterile ophthalmic products.

An automatic Eye Drop Filling Machine in India typically ranges from ₹ 6 lakh for a 30 BPM single-head model to ₹ 22 lakh for a 60 BPM dual-head sterile-grade line. Add nitrogen flushing, LAF integration, and IQ/OQ documents to budget accordingly. Contact us with your bottle size and target output for a tailored quote.

The 30 BPM Eye Drop Filling Machine is a single-track machine for small-batch and pilot production, with a single filling head, single capping head, and modest footprint. The 60 BPM Eye Drop Filling Machine is a dual-head machine with twin filling and capping stations, suitable for commercial-scale production and integrated lines.

An Eye Drop Filling Machine is used in pharmaceutical ophthalmic plants that manufacture lubricating drops, antibiotic drops, anti-allergy drops, anti-glaucoma drops, mydriatic drops, and combination ophthalmic products. It is also used for nasal drops, ear drops, and small-format sterile liquids.

Yes. Both the 30 BPM and 60 BPM Eye Drop Filling Machines support in-line nitrogen flushing before filling. The nozzle purges the bottle headspace with food-grade nitrogen to displace oxygen and protect oxidation-sensitive formulations.

Our Eye Drop Filling Machine ships with a calibration certificate, SS316L material traceability, and a complete IQ/OQ protocol template. WHO-GMP, cGMP, and USFDA documentation packs are available on request, including DQ, IQ, OQ, PQ and 21 CFR Part 11 ready controls.
